How an old adventurer became an ambassador

The "Jägerken of Soest" is the character prancing and cheerfully brandishing the key of the town depicted on posters, leaflets and badges.

To be exact, his name was Simplicius Simplicissimus and is the main character in the novel by Johann Jakob von Grimmelshausen. This picaresque novel contains autobiograhic elements and describes the life of an adventurer living the life of a lord at the time of the 30 Years' War. As a member of Graf Götz' regiment he took part in the siege and subjugation of Soest. He looted and stole from the peasants and townspeople alike - until in Lippstadt he was eventually forced into matrimony - and tamed.

300 years later this adventurer has developed into an ambassador for the venerable town of Soest. On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the death of the author the idea was born to create a novel representative character to accompany the Mayor at the opening of the All Saints' Fair. Since then the Jägerken has belonged to the All Saints' Fair just as the Horse Market, the Bull's Eye and the Bayernzelt.

Each year a new Jägerken is elected honouring certain professions or associations, e.g. town-councillors, members of the police force, male nurses, sportsmen and choristers have all slipped into the costume of the Jägerken.
